About the Book:

Calder MacGerry, laird of an impoverished clan, has resolved to end the bitter feud between the MacGerry and Sinclairs. He jumps at Laird Sinclair’s offer of marriage to his only daughter, Katja, to seal the agreement between their clans—only to get more than he bargained for. Katja’s chance to escape her father’s harsh treatment appears to be too good to be true. But becoming Lady of a clan that despises her because she’s a Sinclair, doesn’t make life any easier. When the attacks turn deadly, she fights her way out, making a dangerous passage to the Shetland Isles for refuge with her Viking family. Calder and Katja’s marriage, built on mistrust, rushes quickly into disaster. As Calder seeks to repair the damage, Katja discovers not another enemy, but a husband who pledges a new beginning.

“Do ye wish to invite yer new wife over for a wee bit of the water of life?” Finn handed the flask of whisky to Calder as they sat beside the fire.

“Nae. Let her sleep if she can. She’s dealt with more than a lass should in one day.”

“Aye, and with nary a word of complaint nor tears. I never knew a Sinclair to be brave without the advantage of numbers. This one appears to have a full measure and then some. Mayhap their women are fiercer than their men.”

Chuckles rumbled low.

“She’s a bonny sight, though she carries more blades than a tinker. Do ye think she knows her way around a dirk?” Finn asked.

Calder spotted the mischief in Finn’s eyes now he’d had more than a few pulls on the flask they passed around. Often, he would get on like this and target his favorite nephew or some other poor soul. Calder didn’t mind the teasing, but had no intention of letting his bride suffer any more disrespect, good-natured or not.

“Sinclair’s man says she does. Says he trained her together with her brothers since they were weans. The way he tells the tale, she’s a fair hand with the bow, too, and trained the dog herself.”

“Speaking of her furry brute, he seems to have taken yer side of the blanket, laird.”

More laughter followed until Calder motioned for them to keep quiet. He had to admit, seeing her lying cuddled next to her massive guardian made him jealous. How long would it be until she desired to lie at his side seeking protection and warmth.
